St. Louis Rams players put hands up during game in apparent nod to Ferguson

Rams-hands-up

Five players for the St. Louis Rams came out for pre-game introductions on Sunday with their hands raised to the sky, presumably as a gesture of solidarity with protesters in Ferguson, Missouri

Rams tight end Jared Cook and receivers Kenny Britt, Stedman Bailey, Chris Givens and Tavon Austin entered the Edward Jones Dome arena Sunday afternoon with their hands raised. Protesters in Ferguson and cities across the United States frequently chant, "Hands up, don’t shoot" during demonstrations, which have been ongoing since last week when a Missouri grand jury did not indict former police officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown in August Read more...

"iPad Air Plus" Leak Supposedly Details Apple's Upcoming Mega Tab

"iPad Air Plus" Leak Supposedly Details Apple's Upcoming Mega Tab

This weekend, a leak from Japanese magazine Mac Fan (subsequently picked up by Macotakara) reveals what they believe to be schematics and specs surrounding Apple's rumored 12.2-inch tablet, the same mega tablet that Bloomberg reported was coming back in August.

However, this leak shaves about 0.7 inches off the 12.9-inch tablet that Bloomberg was expecting. A few more details also say that the huge tablet will have the currently unannounced A9 processor and "four speakers to offer stereo sound in any orientation," according to 9to5 Mac, who also points out that it's near impossible to verify Mac Fan's claims of legitimacy regarding these schematics, but the publication did provide accurate dimensions of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus before its launch.

Many have pegged this new monster iPad with production starting this month, but the Wall Street Journal reported in October that delays due to high iPhone 6 demand had delayed Apple's plans.

Regardless of Apple's plan for production and distribution, I'm having trouble finding the point of making bigger iPads. Other than increased real estate, the iPad Air Plus—as described currently—seems like another spec bump in comparison to the current generation of tablets. I still have an iPad 3, and I'm still not seeing a reason to upgrade to anything new, mainly because iPads are forever.

Also, along with this report, Apple will supposedly launch an iPad mini 4, which will have a "design" similar to this year's iPad Air 2. That kind of makes it sound like it's the mini that should have launched this year, instead of the uninspired iPad mini 3 that only added TouchID and nothing else. In fact, this lackluster outing for the mini, coupled with Apple's new iPhone 6 Plus, made it seem that the mini was facing extinction. This rumor would suggest otherwise.

But that's all it is, just a rumor. But regardless, would a A9-powered, 12.2-inch iPad Air Plus be just thing for you to finally upgrade your tablet? [9to5Mac]

Why do people have different laughs?

Laughing-thumbnail

Laughter may be contagious, but sometimes it sounds like we all have different strains.

Think of those famous, trademark laughs — Fran Drescher's nasally titter, Eddie Murphy's breathless guffaw, Nick Offerman's unexpected giggle. Now, think of your own. They're all different, as if dialects or accents from across the geography of laughter.

The reasons we laugh extend beyond responses to humor — laughter is a social tool, one we use to interact with each other and also to take advantage of its benefits (like its therapeutic effects and advantages for improving memory) Read more...

Thousands of flights delayed on busiest travel day of the year

Aiport-delay

Thousands of passengers were delayed at airports across the United States on Sunday, which is expected to be the busiest travel day of the year.

As of 4 p.m. ET Sunday afternoon, more than 2,300 flights were delayed and close to 400 canceled, according to FlightAware, which tracks airport delays

Denver International Airport was one of the airports experiencing the highest number of delayed flights, with 24% of outbound flights and 20% of inbound flights delayed due to low visibility, according to FlightAware. Forty-six inbound flights to Denver were diverted to other airports — primarily Colorado Springs — because of dense fog, ABC News reported. However, some planes were reportedly able to return to Denver later in the day. Read more...

Music labels sue Cox for not doing enough to stop piracy

Large American internet service providers these days tend to operate under a "six strikes" approach to piracy -- they'll warn you if they catch copyright violations, but it's unlikely that you'll get the boot. However, that isn't good enough for BMG ...

Sync Solver Brings Your Fitbit Data to Apple’s Healthkit

Sync Solver Brings Your Fitbit Data to Apple’s Healthkit

iOS: We've covered some of the apps that send data to iOS 8's Healthkit. Fitbit doesn't directly talk to Healthkit. Sync Solver fixes that problem.

After you install the app, it syncs in the background once a day to Healthkit. Fitbit's API doesn't allow continuously syncing like the Fitbit app does. If you have an iPhone 5S or higher you'll need to tweak Healthkit to prevent recording steps twice.

Our Favorite Android, iOS, and Windows Phone Apps of the Week

Our Favorite Android, iOS, and Windows Phone Apps of the Week

A smartphone is only as great as its apps, and developers were hard at work again this week to make your pocket computer just a little bit better. This week iOS saw a swell of platform-only apps whereas Android was a little light. I also came across an amazing language-learning app for Windows Phone that's giving me only mild OS jealousy. Take a look at this week's new smartphone superpowers.

Android

QKSMS

Our Favorite Android, iOS, and Windows Phone Apps of the Week

QK Labs brings a lot of neat little innovations to the your normal text messaging app. Perhaps one of my favorites is a night time mode that makes staring at your overly illuminated smartphone screen less painful when you need to send that short message before bed. Also, quick messaging from home screen makes QKSMS one of the smarter SMS/MMS options when Google's growing number of messaging apps just don't cut it. [Free]

iOS

Weather Or Not

Our Favorite Android, iOS, and Windows Phone Apps of the Week

Numerous weather apps litter every app store imaginable. However, few are as nicely designed and useful as Weather or Not. Like many weather apps, you can create several location profiles and the app opens up into a sliding timeline that delivers weather information up to the very minute of your day. You can also easily switch between any other day that week in its seven-day forecast along the bottom, and the app integrates wonderfully with iOS 8's new third-party widget capabilities. [$3]

#Homescreen

Our Favorite Android, iOS, and Windows Phone Apps of the Week

Writing the weekly "Apps of the Week" section makes me understandably interested in what people are actually downloading onto their smartphones. Instead of being incredibly nosy, and inevitably surveying my friends' apps when I borrow their phone, Homescreen makes my smartphone snooping much more easier (and even encouraged!). Currently only for iOS, Homescreen is a simple app that lets you peruse what other peoples' homescreens look like and uses image recognition tech to deliver more info when you hover over an icon. If you're constantly on the hunt to test new apps (which if you're reading this, there's a good chance), Homescreen is must-have addition to your app collection. [Free]

Canopy

Our Favorite Android, iOS, and Windows Phone Apps of the Week

Canopy is a well-designed and curated Amazon shopping experience for iPhone. It takes out some of the chaotic nature out of Amazon's own mobile experience, has a great discovery/search function, and also allows you to create collections and share finds with other users. It's simple design makes mobile shopping a much more calming adventure. [Free]

Windows Phone

Hanyu.co

Our Favorite Android, iOS, and Windows Phone Apps of the Week

Last week, we mentioned Windows Phone new official Duolingo app, letting you learn all kinds of new languages. But one of Duolingo's many lingual blindspots are Asian languages, specifically the most widely spoken tongue on the planet—Mandarin. Hanyu.co plugs that unfortunate gap with its well-designed and intuitive app for learning Mandarin. Much like Duolingo, the app guides you through courses and vocabulary while tracking your progress. This isn't a brand new app as its resided in the Windows Phone app store for a couple months, but its mention via Windows Central along with my own dabbling makes it clear that it deserves a mention (despite my tardiness). [Free]

Multi Platform

Clippit

Our Favorite Android, iOS, and Windows Phone Apps of the Week

Ok, this app is really fun. Clippit for Android and iOS lets you create clips of TV shows that are currently airing (for a maximum of 30 seconds) and lets you share your creations via Facebook, Twitter, or through Clippit's own community. This will be amazingly awesome once Game of Thrones starts up this spring and perusing the app on Saturday gave me a good look at some of the weekend's best college football plays. Also, you can basically watch a bunch of TV shows in short 15 second increments (if you so desire). Check it out. It runs great, is totally free, and totally worth it. [Free/Android and iOS]

Young father writes his own touching, funny obituary

Obit

In his 35 years of life, Aaron Joseph Purmort battled crime, married Gwen Stefani and somehow also found time to work as an art director.

The young father died of brain cancer on Nov. 25, and found a way to leave his family smiling in their time of sadness by writing his own obituary with a heavy dose of humor. Purmort mixed real facts about his life with amusing exaggerations that capture the humor he maintained while fighting his illness.

Read the obituary in full, below:

Purmort, Aaron Joseph age 35, died peacefully at home on November 25 after complications from a radioactive spider bite that led to years of crime-fighting and a years-long battle with a nefarious criminal named Cancer, who has plagued our society for far too long. Civilians will recognize him best as Spider-Man, and thank him for his many years of service protecting our city

His family knew him only as a kind and mild-mannered Art Director, a designer of websites and t-shirts and concert posters, who always had the right cardigan and the right thing to say (even if it was wildly inappropriate). Aaron was known for his long, entertaining stories, which he loved to repeat often Read more...

Someone Made a Video of The Count Counting Pi to 10,000 Decimal Places

Someone Made a Video of The Count Counting Pi to 10,000 Decimal Places

Here's a weird little corner of the internet for you to devour. YouTube user Crysknife007 is well-known for hours-long sci-fi marathons of idling starship engines or the silent ambience of Rick Deckard's apartment. But this time, we get our favorite numbers-addicted Muppet counting Pi up to 10,000 decimal places.

I've written about Crysknife007 before as his ambient sci-fi soundtracks are basically the best thing ever for productive white noise/sleep aid. I can't recommend them highly enough. This is a charming addition to Crysknife's relentless repertoire, and one that would seem to require a level of tediousness that can hardly be fathomed. But with every. single. number. being punctuated by a hearty eastern European "HA-HA-HA," your mind begins to feel like it's melting after about three minutes. Give it a listen, won't you?

You can always just give it 100 or 1000 decimal places if you've don't have enough time to dedicate the near 6 hours needed.

The internet is weird, man. [YouTube]

No severance package for Darren Wilson, Ferguson mayor says

Darren-wilson1

FERGUSON, Mo. — Former Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson did not receive a severance package when he resigned over the weekend, the St. Louis suburb's mayor said Sunday.

Wilson, 28, won't receive any further pay or benefits, and he and the city have severed their ties, Mayor James Knowles told reporters a day after Wilson tendered his resignation, which was effective immediately.

Wilson, who is white, had been on administrative leave since he shot and killed Michael Brown, an unarmed black 18-year-old, during an Aug. 9 confrontation. He wrote in his resignation letter that his "continued employment may put the residents and police officers of the City of Ferguson at risk, which is a circumstance I cannot allow." Read more...
